Sport Tourism in the Western Province

The western province is the most high-flying destination site for sports tourism.  It posses a number of sport grounds, clubs, swimming pools and other specialized sports facilities suitable to different levels of sportsmanship. Developed infrastructure facilities and social setting undoubtedly provide a greater inspiration for high entertainment in sport tourism. Not only yearly based inter and intra provincial trophies but also many national and international sport events are staged in the province. Such sports as golf, Cricket, Rugby, Hockey, Football, Netball, Basketball, Tennis, Badminton, Swimming, Elle, Volleyball, martial arts and motor racing are practiced in the province.

 

Inbounds tourists can practice a number of sports using world class facilities in the province at competitive low rates. They can also organize group practices/tournaments in the province

The popular sport clubs and grounds in the province are:

Sugathadasa & Premadasa stadiums are used for day and night events.

CR & FC, CH & FC and Havelock grounds are specially used for Rugby. As a game, Rugby holds an important place in such school as Isipathana, Ananda, St. Thomas, Royal and Thurston Colleges.  

 

Cricket

Cricket is the most popular game in Sri Lanka. The Western Province belongs 10 out of 20 of 1st level test cricket stadiums of the country. Few of these grounds are SSC, Premadasa, NCC, Movers, BRC, Bloomfield & Tamil Union grounds. Thalawathugoda Austasia ground is important an indoor stadium. CR & FC, CH & FC, Havelock, SSC, Sugathadasa, Premadasa, Saravanamuttu, NCC, Movers & BRC stadiums located in the western province can be used to play games under flood lights. Austasia & Sugathadasa are two main indoor stadiums in the western province with many facilities. The Royal College and University of Colombo’s indoor grounds mainly serve for Table tennis, Badminton and Tennis.

 Sugathadasa stadium is important for athletic games. This stadium is used to many other games except cricket. The hockey turf at Kurunduwatta in the province is at international standard.  

 Cooray Park, Shalika and Sugathadasa grounds are used as football grounds. International Football matches are mostly staged at the Sugathadasa stadium.

 The swimming pool at Sugathadasa stadium is important for swimming competitions. Ananda, Thurstan, Royal, D.S. Senanayaka and St. Peter’s  Colleges also have well developed swimming pools for school level practices.

 Such martial arts as Karate, Judo, Boxing, Jet kundo and  Kung-fun are popular in the province.

 

Motor Race

Annual motor cycle and car races are held in Katukurunda  and Bolgoda Lake areas during different seasons.

Besides a sport, Cycling is a great way to discover the province. Most of the national cycle trails start from Colombo.

The Kotte bike club usually organizes bicycle rides around the outskirts of Colombo.
